Scratching, whispering, talking, slurping, smacking, breathing, tinkering, tapping, tracing, rubbing, even eating -- the list goes on and on. Whatever proclivity for relaxation or weird fascination you may have, you’ll find the videos to satisfy it on YouTube. “But dude, what the crap are you talking about?” you ask. “Just how many types of relaxation videos are there?” Well, there’s a lot. New variations and subgenres are popping up all the time. And since core styles alone could fill up several articles, we figured we’d start with an overview.
So these are the top 10 core styles of relaxation videos on YouTube. 10. Nature Videos
Beautiful, majestic scenes of moss-covered logs, bubbling brooks, fluttering butterflies, blowing leaves, and bustling ecosystems will pull you into their earthly realms and relax you with the peaceful ambience of natural sounds. These videos can range from nature sounds paired with a still shot of an outside location to actual documentary style footage. Many of the videos in this category weren’t designed with relaxation in mind, but as with some massage and ASMR inducing videos, they may have an unintentionally relaxing quality. Ironically, the more complete footage is often LESS popular than other, more specialized types of nature videos, such as rain or fire audio, which have little or no visual complement.
9. Soft/World Music
You can easily find yourself on a transcendental adventure across the globe through the power of YouTube. Expert musical performances can be found in a wide variety of tones and at various paces. From natural drums to flutes, to didgeridoos, to monk chants; there are many musical options out there to help you relax. Some of our personal favorites include a combination of soft tongue drums or singing bowls with ASMR. The results are highly effective. Zzzzzzz.
8. Eating Sounds
"What? Who would want to watch or listen to someone eat!?" Conversely, “Ooooh yeeeah.” Likely, you have one or the other strong reaction to this genre of video. We weren’t actually sure where to put it on this list, to be honest, but it seems to be a growing genre and within its niche garners some serious view counts. In fact, one of the top ASMRtists in the world has a channel dedicated to eating. Our theory is that it's having an effect similar to how cooking channels make you hungry. Except in this version, the ASMR aspect drives the sensations of eating deep down into that primal area of your brain. The more appetizing it looks and sounds, the more mentally satiated you get, if you will. It’s not our cup of tea but as always, you do you.
7. Light Touch
Light touch is kind of a sub-genre of massage that some people get very strong sympathetic "mirror neuron" reactions from. Mirror neurons fire both when you experience something, and when you see another experience it. So you get the feeling of the light touch just from watching it happen. Until recently, it was something you might see as part of a massage, or a style of hand movement for ASMR. But now, light touch has become its very own brand of massage. Around here we think of it as a massage for your nervous system. Another recent development is increased effort in creating a nice atmosphere for relaxation in the videos, which has evolved leaps and bounds. We are especially pleased, for example with the feel we created in this light touch massage video.
